Chat is a powerful tool in Copy.ai that allows you to have open-ended conversations with any of the LLMs available on the platform in order to brainstorm ideas, get questions answered, and generate all kinds of content. This guide will walk you through the key features and functionality of Chat to help you get the most out of this capability.
Creating a new Chat Project
To start a new chat, simply click the + button in the left navigation bar or the New chat button from the homepage inside your Teamspace.
This will create a new chat project, which stores the history of messages exchanged in that conversation. Chat projects allow you to refer back to prior conversations and pick up where you left off.
1. Naming your Chat Project
In the top left, you can name your Chat Project. Naming your Chat Project is important as this is how you'll locate it on the Projects section in the future
2. Chat Project menu
The Chat Project menu allows you to:
Copy link: Copy the link to the project
Rename: Rename the project
Move to Folder: Move the project to a different Folder
Move to Teamspace: Move the project to a different Teamspace
Delete: Delete the project. WARNING: This cannot be undone.
3. Choosing a Language Model
In the top right of the Chat interface, you'll see a dropdown menu to select the language model to power the conversation. The platform offers a range of models optimized for different use cases, so choose the one that best fits your needs for that chat.
You can change the model selection at any point during the conversation.
The default Chat Project model is set to GPT-4o, however you can select any of the available models as needed to experiment and leverage each for their respective strengths.
4. The Chat Window
Type inside the chat window and then press the arrow icon on the right, or hit Enter to submit and send the Chat message.
5. Attach / Using Infobase in Chat
To provide additional context to inform the AI's responses, click the Attach button to upload a document. This will upload the file to your Teamspace’s Infobase so the AI can reference that content in the current chat and future conversations.
After uploading a document, or if you want to use an existing Infobase asset in your teamspace, just reference the desired document or tag with a # (hashtag).
Check out our Infobase documentation to learn more about using Infobase in Chat.
6. Browse Prompts & Custom Prompts
Copy.ai provides a library of pre-written prompts for common use cases, which you can access by clicking Prompts in the bottom left corner.
Select any prompt and the AI will populate it with relevant details about your business and industry.
You can also write your own prompts and save them for future use under Custom Prompts.
7. Brand Voice
If your organization has defined brand voices in the current Teamspace, you can select one from the Brand Voice dropdown in the bottom of the chat window. This will inform the model select to adopt the tone and style of that brand voice in its responses throughout the chat conversation.
8. Prompt Improver
If you need some help prompting, you can use the Improve button in the bottom right of the chat window. Once you write out your first draft of a prompt, the Improve button will become enabled. Click that button and Chat will provide a more robust and detailed prompt for you to edit.
The Editor
Whenever the AI writes a response you'd like to build on or refine, click the Add to Editor button below that message, or click on the Editor icon on the right hand side of the screen.
This will open up the text editor view, where you can modify the AI's output with a range of powerful tools:
Rewrite: Highlight any text and click "Rewrite" to generate alternative versions of that selected passage. The AI will provide several options to choose from.
Write more: Place your cursor at the end of a sentence or paragraph and press Tab to have Chat elaborate and extend the text with additional details or examples.
Word/Character Count: The editor also provides real-time counts of the words and characters in your piece. When you're done editing, you can export the text to use elsewhere.
Other Important Features
Searching the Internet
In addition to drawing upon the selected large language model’s own knowledge, Chat can also search the internet in real-time to find relevant information to inform its responses. If Chat searches the internet, it will cite online sources with links at the end of its message so you can refer to and fact check the original content.
Accessing Existing Projects
You can access existing projects in your Teamspace by clicking Projects in the left hand navigation menu. On the Projects page, you can see two sections:
Folders: A list of my folders that contain other projects
Projects: A list of projects that are not stored in folders. You’ll be able to see the date, rename, or move the project(s) to different Teamspaces accordingly.
Organizing Projects Into Folders
Folders are a way to organize projects that pertain to the same topic or theme. On the Projects page simply check one or more or more checkboxes on the project then select Move to > Folder. Finally, select the destination folder for your Project to be moved.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I decide to use Chat vs Workflows?
It’s important to think about when to use which area of the Copy.ai platform. Chat allows is perfect for ad-hoc requests or if you need to be hands-on with the content you’re working with.
Workflows is best for codifying and scaling processes, especially if that process includes research.
It’s important to point out that you don’t have to choose- in some cases, a Workflow will generate a quick, high quality first draft, and then you can refine it within Chat.
